About Dr. David Liebert

I have been providing psychotherapy since 1998. I earned a master's degree in Family Sociology and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology. I'm also a full Professor at St. Petersburg College, and I'm the author of several books, both fiction and nonfiction.

My services are provided through Telehealth only in those states I am licensed in, which include Florida, Idaho, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania.

Much of my work is with people navigating significant life changes — the transitions that force us to reconsider who we are and what matters. I work with couples seeking to understand each other more honestly and rebuild connection, and with individuals facing the emotional weight of chronic illness, where the questions are as much about meaning and identity as they are about health.

About Psychotherapy

Most therapy starts by asking, "How do we make this feeling go away?" I start somewhere different: "What is this feeling here to tell you?"

Anxiety, sadness, restlessness, the sense that something isn't right — these aren't just malfunctions to be silenced. More often, they're signals. They point to a life out of step with your values, a choice you've been avoiding, or a question you haven't yet let yourself ask. My work rests on a simple conviction: the way through is not around your struggle, but through it — toward a life that actually feels like yours.

I won't just hand you coping techniques. Those have their place, but they're often a way of managing the symptom while ignoring the message. Instead, we'll do the harder, more honest work of understanding what your distress is really about, and what you want to do about it.

I'm direct. If you ask me what I think, I'll tell you — plainly and respectfully. I don't candy-coat my observations, because I've found that people don't grow from comfortable agreement; they grow from being taken seriously enough to be told the truth. You can expect honesty, not flattery.

This is your life, and you're the one who gets to decide how to live it. My role isn't to hand you the answers, but to help you ask better questions, face what you've been avoiding, and move toward the person you want to become.

If that's the kind of work you're looking for, I'd welcome the conversation.
